Sporting Facilities

Tamworth is home to over 180 different sporting groups and over 45 different types of sport.

There are major home bases for hockey, equine, soccer, baseball, cricket, netball, football, gymnastics, golf, cycling, athletics, basketball and tennis. There are facilities for bowls, squash and even croquet.

The city hosts over 230 special sports events each year including national and state titles and regional championships in sports like BMX, golf, cricket, hang gliding and motorsports.

Tamworth has are over 50 dedicated civic sports grounds – that’s 3,200 hectares of green space. These grounds include two 18-hole championship golf courses, sand and synthetic green links, shooting ranges, equestrian fields and areas for paint ball, motorbikes and go-carts. Tamworth has seven fitness centres, six public swimming pools and plenty of other public and commercial sporting venues.

The internationally recognised and award winning $33 million Australian Equine and Livestock Events Centre (AELEC) opened in 2008 and offers superior venue facilities for all sorts of horse sports.

A new $10 million sports centre, to open in January 2011, has 4 international standard timber courts and two synthetic indoor courts as well as 18 outdoor courts. The facilities will suit netball, basketball, indoor volleyball, futsal and badminton. Planning is underway to provide Tamworth with a modern indoor aquatic centre.

Sport is big business and contributed over $17 million in economic impact in 2008 – from events as diverse as boxing, golf, gliding, waterpolo, gymnastics and horse shows.
