The final instalment in our ‘How to spend the perfect day in…’ series takes us to the Evocity of Bathurst. As you’re about to discover, last absolutely does not mean least when it comes to discovering this scenic, progressive and welcoming city!

Just a 20 minute drive from the heart of Bathurst is Chiefly Dam. Whether you enjoy swimming, water skiing, sailing, fishing or a leisurely stroll around the water’s edge, this is a great place to relax and have some fun. The dam is a hive of activity as locals take advantage of the great outdoors and excellent facilities including playground, boat ramp, picnic areas and BBQs – a must visit especially during the warmer months!
If you enjoy running, the weekly Bathurst Park Run is a great way to keep active and take part in a great community initiative while taking in the scenic Macquarie River. If you’re new to town, it’s also a wonderful way to meet like-minded locals!
Once you’ve worked up an appetite for some delicious fresh produce, the Bathurst Farmer’s Markets are the perfect place to explore a bountiful supply of locally produced fruit and vegetables, honey, soap, oils, wine, meat, bread, plants and cut flowers, gourmet sauces and marinades, cakes, fudge, coffee and natural skin care products. There’s also a great selection of ready-to-eat snacks, sweet treats and coffee.
If you’re in the mood for some more shopping or R&R, Keppel Street is Bathurst’s go-to destination for a funky, hipster-type atmosphere. Boasting a huge variety of locally owned stores and cafes, this is the perfect spot to enjoy a great brew and watch the world go by. Some of the great cafes to explore along Keppel Street include; The Hub, Legall Patisserie Cafe and Al Dente. Other great CBD cafes to try include Piccolo’s on William, The Hub and Sweet Caramel. Bathurst City Library is located in the centre of the CBD on Keppel Street. Having recently undergone a major refurbishment, this modern facility boasts plenty of comfy couch seating, excellent resources, author talks, HSC Study Lab and story time for the little ones. The library is conveniently co-located with the Bathurst Regional Art Gallery, a spectacular modern gallery featuring a jam packed annual calendar of local and international exhibitions, workshops, masterclasses, school holiday activities, private tours and more.
Machattie Park is one of the highlights of the Bathurst CBD. This traditional Victorian style park is simply stunning with fountains, lake, plenty of big shady trees and perfectly manicured gardens. Not only is Machattie Park a great place to unwind and soak up the sunshine, it’s also a popular spot for young families to feed the ducks.
Indulge your sweet tooth with a trip to Annie’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream Parlour, a local favourite affectionately known as ‘Annie’s’. Sample over 20 flavours of ice cream made on site everyday and enjoy the colourful, retro surrounds or take your delectable dessert just across the road to enjoy outdoors in Kings Parade.
As the evening descends, Bathurst comes alive with a fantastic selection of pubs, bars and restaurants. Church Bar + Woodfired Pizza is a great destination to enjoy gourmet pizzas, cocktails, local wines and craft beer. Bathurst’s dining offering also includes; Cobblestone Lane, The Terrace Thai Cuisine, Maalouf’s Lebanese and Jack Duggan’s Irish Pub, to name but a few.
